Commit Thy Way Unto the Lord (Hebrew: Roll Thy Way Upon the Lord)

the Rev. Henry Huenemann

Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass (Psalm 37:5).

Bible Reading

Psalm 37:1-18:

1Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.
2For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.
3Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.
4Delight thyself also in the LORD: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
5Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.
6And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.
7Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.
8Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.
9For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth.
10For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.
11But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.
12The wicked plotteth against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth.
13The LORD shall laugh at him: for he seeth that his day is coming.
14The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, and to slay such as be of upright conversation.
15Their sword shall enter into their own heart, and their bows shall be broken.
16A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked.
17For the arms of the wicked shall be broken: but the LORD upholdeth the righteous.
18The LORD knoweth the days of the upright: and their inheritance shall be for ever.

Devotional

Is your way dark before thee? Is your heart full of anxious cares? Do the burdens you must bear seem too heavy for you? Are you sometimes near unto despair? O child of God, tempted and tried, look unto him who rules the universe, who directs the stars in their courses. Surely He is able to direct your path.

He that directeth, guideth
The clouds, the air, the wind,
Faithful to thee abideth—
A way for thee will find.
     (From the German)

His promises are sure. They are for you in your distress. Lay hold of them in faith. Here are a few of them: "For thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness . . . Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved . . . Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you ... Be careful (or in nothing be anxious); but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."

"Take no though for your life . . . Behold the fowls . . . Consider the lilies . . . Are ye not much better than they." Trust in God: He will give you all things needful, and will bring to pass what is best for you.

Prayer

O God, Thou art our Father, who loveth us with an infinite love. Thou knowest all our needs and art willing and able to supply them. We thank Thee for Thy precious promises. Help us to believe them. Forgive us our fears and doubts and unbelief. Grant us a childlike faith and trust. Enable us to rest in Thy promises. We know that Thou wilt make all things work together for our good. We know that Thou, who didst deliver up Thy Son for us all, art willing with him freely to give us all things. Father, we thank Thee. Amen.
