The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light (Matthew 6:22).
Bible Reading
Luke 11:29-36:Devotional
Some time ago an optician explained to us the mechanism of the eye. We cannot give his explanation here; but we stand amazed at the construction of the eye. But who can explain to us, why or how this mechanism enables us to see? When the eye is sound, the whole body is full of light. If it is not sound, the whole body is full of darkness. And when the light in you is darkness, how great is that darkness. But the source of light is the sun. If the sun were blotted out, no one could see.
So spiritually, Christ is the light of the world, the Sun of righteousness. If Christ is in us and we in him, we are children of light, and walk in the light, and God's Word is a light upon our path. Solomon admonishes us: "Let thine eyes look right on . . . Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be estabÂlished. Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil." Christ says, "Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness. If the whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light." We have no light in ourselves; but let us remember: "In thy light shall we see light."
Prayer
O Lord God, Thou dwellest in a light unto which no man can approach. But Thou hast revealed Thyself in Jesus Christ, the Light of the world. And in his name we may come unto Thee. Thou who hast commanded the light to shine out of darkness, shine also into our hearts, and give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. May we walk in the light, and wilt Thou cause many who sit in darkness to come to the light. And lead us all in the path of the just, that is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day, when the Lord himself shall be our everÂlasting light. Amen.
